Just been reading about a stray dog in Greece that has been doused with chemicals. Poor little mite looks dreadful but is still gentle with humans. Can't quite believe that anyone would do this deliberately. I love Greece and want to live there but on every trip I find myself falling out with someone about the way in which strays are treated. On my last trip to Lesvos is was a young Greek family eating supper in a Gyros restaurant who got my filthy stare. A stray little pup was sitting and watching them eat, not harassing them, just near their table. They chucked water over him and all had a good laugh. I know he wouldn't have been injured but why do it? He wasn't even begging. I think he just wanted to be near humans and couldn't resist the smell.
We also managed to piss off our apartment owners by bringing a pregnant dog back. Well, actually she followed us because we had shared a bit of ham with her. She got swiftly booted out of the complex. I know there are good reasons for not having dogs around apartments but a little kindness goes a long way. Lesvos in general was pretty good in terms of the locals looking after their animals and leaving a few scraps out for the strays but still a long way to go.
